JR Simplot is to triple ammonia capacity at its fertiliser plant at Brandon, Manitoba, in Canada, and will invest over Can$220m ($169m) in the project. Simplot is to acquire an existing but mothballed ammonia plant (350 000 tonne/year) from Enichem Agricoltura in Priolo, Sicily, and move it to Brandon. Contractors are to disassemble the Priolo facility and deliver it by June 1996. The plant will be reengineered for the Brandon site, and startup is planned for mid-1997. The existing unit at Brandon coupled with the two units from Sicily will increase ammonia production to 530 000 tonne/year.
