INDONESIAN unsaturated polyester resin producer Justus Sakti Raya Corp (JSRC) is constructing a 14 000 tonne/year maleic anhydride and 2000 tonne/year fumaric acid facility in Jakarta.

The US$30m facility will startup in Q3 1997 and will use Lonza's technology.

JSRC currently imports MA for its 24 000 tonne/year unsaturated polyester resin facility. MA product will be used to feed the existing unsaturated polyester resin facility and the new fumaric acid facility. The balance MA and fumaric acid product will be sold to alkyd resin customers in Asia.

JSRC will require 18 000 tonne/year of benzene for the MA facility. The company has yet to secure its benzene feedstock supply. It is looking to source from Pertamina. However, it has heard that the benzene that Pertamina produces is only for export. The other possibilities are Humpuss Aromatik, Chandra Asri and Singapore.

The other MA project is the 20 000 tonne/year Globechem Pacific Perkasa (GPP) upcoming facility in Merak, West Java. GPP will apply Huntsman Specialty Chemicals' technology which uses n-butane feedstock.

Chisso Engineering is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project. Engineering work is on schedule, GPP said. The company is part of Eterindo Wahanatama.

Another Eterindo Wahanatama joint venture, Petrowidada, produces MA as a byproduct. MA capacity is currently 2100 tonne/year and will increase to 3900 tonne/year when the company's PA capacity is lifted to 130 000 tonne/year in H2 1998.

When GPP starts up at end-1998, the MA byproduct from Petrowidada will be used to produce MA derivatives.

By that time, the supply and sale of MA will come only from GPP. The MA byproduct is at present sold locally.
