BHARAT Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) achieved its highest-ever sales turnover of Rs179.89bn (US$5.03bn) in the financial year 1996-97, up 21.4% from Rs148.22bn in the previous year. The improvement in turnover was due to a 6.8% increase in sales volume to 15.8m tonne. BPCL's net profit increased by 12% to Rs4326m.

The better performance was partly due to the Bombay refinery processing 7.56m tonne last year, up from 7.35m tonne in 1995-96.

BPCL also commissioned 85 new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distributors. The company's consumers of LPG rose from 6m to 6.5m. The company is setting up three joint-venture refineries and plans to invest Rs80bn on projects, including LPG-bottling plants and a gas oil desulphurisation unit.
