LONDON (CNI)--German chemicals giant BASF confirmed on Monday plans to bring additional phenoxyethanol capacity onstream at its Ludwigshafen site.
BASF said phenoxyethanol capacity at Ludwigshafen is being tripled under an expansion scheme due to come onstream in January 2001.
The company said the expanded plant would be the largest of its kind in the world, but would not disclose either the existing or projected capacity.
The plant, which is BASF's only phenoxyethanol production facility, will be fully integrated into the Ludwigshafen 'verbund' structure. BASF was unable to quantify the investment involved in the expansion.
Phenoxyethanol, which is also known as ethylene glycol monophenyl or monophenyl glycol, is used as a co-formulant additive due to its solvent properties. It is supplied by BASF for a number of different industrial uses including biocidal or preservative applications in cosmetics and household products. BASF's specialty chemicals division supplies phenoxyethanol as a biocide under the Protectol PE and Protectol PE S tradenames.
