SINGAPORE (CNI)--Pre-feasibility studies on BASF's and Huntsman Polyurethane's proposed toluene di-isocyanate (TDI)/methylene di-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) plant in Caojing, China, have been completed and the company is expecting the final feasibility study to be completed by the end of the year, a BASF spokesman told CNI on Wednesday.
The project is a joint venture between the German-based BASF and Huntsman Polyurethane of the US.
"We see strong demand in China over the next ten years and demand is likely to outstrip supply. BASF is in China on a long-term basis but we do not believe in aggressive marketing," the spokesman added.
Work on the plant is expected to commence soon after the feasibility study is completed and the plant is scheduled to be operational in 2004-2005. That is also the scheduled startup date for BASF's 1.7m tonne/year petrochemical complex, located in Nanjing.
The Nanjing petrochemical complex is a joint venture with China Petroleum & Chemical Corp (Sinopec).
