LONDON (CNI)--Franco-Belgian chemicals company AtoFina is to spend $20m (Euro24m) to boost hydrogen peroxide (H202) capacity by just over 50% at its Becancour plant in Quebec, Canada.

It said Thursday that the increase, from 73 000 tonne/year to 110 000 tonne/year, would make Becancour one of the world's largest hydrogen peroxide plants by 2004.

The increased capacity will enable AtoFina to meet increasing market needs in North America, the company said.

The Becancour site, which employs 56 people, is one of six AtoFina hydrogen peroxide plants. The other five are located at Memphis, Tennessee; Jarrie in France; Leuna, Germany; Tomakomai in Japan; and Shanghai, China.
