Regulation FD Improves Financial Disclosure

After one year in place, the Securities & Exchange Commission's (SEC) Regulation Fair Disclosure is meeting the objective of fair and equal disclosure of companies' financial information to the general public and industry analysts, according to a recent study by PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Nearly 90 percent of surveyed companies said the regulation should be continued, but 68 percent said the SEC should issue specific guidelines about what information is material to companies and requires disclosure. Overall, 75 percent of those surveyed reported no impact on their company's stock price from Regulation FD.

US Productivity Gains

Much of US labor productivity growth was real and will continue, according to a recent report by McKinsey & Company. The consultancy estimates that half of the productivity acceleration from 1995 to 1999 can be sustained over the next five years. Six sectors--retail, wholesale, securities, telecom, semiconductors and computer manufacturing--accounted for the majority of the productivity gains. Information technology, product, service and process innovations, and to a lesser extent, cyclical demand factors were the most important reasons for the gains.

CKNs Emerge as Key Tool

CKNs provide environments that enable employees to self-organize into informal groups or virtual communities that are linked by the Internet.
