LONDON (CNI)--BASF said Tuesday it is to build a world-scale methanesulfonic acid (MSA) plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

A spokesman for the German chemicals giant told CNI the plant, which is scheduled to come onstream at the beginning of 2003, will produce "several thousand tonnes" of MSA per year. The cost of building the plant was not disclosed.

BASF said the MSA production will extend its product range for the worldwide electroplating industry and the components industry for electronics manufacture.

MSA is an organic acid used as a solvent for numerous heavy metals and their salts, mainly in electrolytic baths, said BASF.
