LONDON (CNI)--Mitsubishi Chemical Corp (MCC) inaugurated on Wednesday production of bisphenol A (BPA) from its plant at Kurosaki in Kita-Kyushu City, Japan.
Construction of the plant, which has an annual capacity of 100 000 tonne/year, began in January 2001. It was brought onstream a year later and reached full production earlier this month.
MCC, which also has a 100 000 tonne/year BPA plant at Kashima, has invested in the new capacity at Kurosaki to meet growing demand for polycarbonate (PC) resins for which BPA is a key raw material. Worldwide demand for PC resins is expected to grow at about 10% a year, according to MCC.
As part of its plans to meet increased demand for PC, MCC is also expanding production capacity at Kashima for cumene, phenol and acetone, the raw materials for BPA.
