HOUSTON (CNI)--Specialty chemicals producer Albemarle said Wednesday that company president Mark Rohr will also serve as chief executive of the firm effective 1 October.

On that date, current chief executive Floyd Gottwald will become vice chairman of the board and will continue as chairman of the executive committee. Gottwald has been chief executive of Richmond, Virginia-based Albemarle since it was founded in 1994.

Rohr joined Albemarle in 1999 as executive vice president and was named president and chief operating officer the following year.

Albemarle said in a statement that Rohr's appointment as chief executive "affirms the board's confidence in Rohr's leadership and corporate stewardship as demonstrated by his increasing levels of responsibility in the organisation."

The company also noted that "as part of an orderly succession of corporate responsibilities," over the next several months Gottwald will work with Rohr to facilitate the transition.

A manufacturer of specialty chemicals for consumer electronics, pharmaceuticals, industrial, construction and packaging applications, Albemarle had 2001 sales of $917m (Euro935m) from operations in 40 countries.
