AUSTIN, Texas (ICIS news)--Texas overtook Iowa during the month of September to become the top biodiesel-producing state in the US, the Biodiesel Coalition of Texas (BCOT) said on Thursday.
There are now 13 biodiesel producers in Texas, with combined capacity of 87m gallons/year, BCOT president Jeff Karlak told the first Texas Biodiesel Conference and Expo.
There are another nine plants under construction in Texas that will have a combined capacity of 89m gallons/year, he said.
The US as a whole has 86 biodiesel plants in operation. Of those, 55 have capacity of less than 5m gallons/year; the trend in construction of new plants is for units of around 20m gallons/year.
Total US output in 2005 was only around 75m gallons, Karlak said. The BCOT now has 36 member companies, up from only six at the start of the year, underscoring the rapid growth in the biofuels industry in a state that is also the dominant force in the US refining industry. Some 380 industry participants were present at the conference.
