TORONTO (ICIS news)--Canada’s NOVA Chemicals may build a large new polyethylene (PE) plant in Alberta as early as 2010, chief executive Jeff Lipton said in remarks made available on Friday.

The project would come on the back of increased feedstock supplies from a planned new 40,000 bbl/day ethane extraction project, Lipton said.

Commenting on initiatives in San Francisco to ban plastic bags, Lipton said it was not likely that a ban would be imposed. He added the San Francisco initiative was driven by concerns over the space the bags take up in landfills.

However, a study showed that plastic bags took up less than half a percent of the space in landfills, he said.

Also, plastic bags consumed less energy to make and were cheaper than paper bags, Lipton added.

“The idea that a plastic bag is some horrible thing just doesn’t make a lot of sense to most people … our guess is that in the end the mayor of San Francisco will not support a ban of plastic bags,” he said.

Lipton was speaking to investors at NOVA’s annual meeting on Thursday in Calgary.
