SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--China imported more polymers in March this year compared to a year ago, but imports of most aromatics fell, statistics from the country’s customs bureau showed on Tuesday.

Imports of high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density PE (LDPE) and linear low density PE (LLDPE) grew 21%, 13% and 36% respectively while polypropylene (PP) imports rose 27% to 312,124 tonnes.

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) imports rose 9% and 17% respectively.

The exceptions were polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) imports, which fell 21% and 11% respectively.

The country also exported more polymers in March from the same month last year, except for LDPE, which fell 23% 1,301 tonnes.

China imported 39% more naphtha but exported 19% less of the product last month.

It imported more olefins, namely ethylene and propylene, in March, but saw butadiene (BD) imports fall 54% to 6,632 tonnes.

Exports of BD, however, surged to 2,271 tonnes in March this year from 212 tonnes the same month last year.

The country imported less aromatics last month, except for toluene, which saw a slight rise of 2%.

Exports of PX tripled to 14,326 tonnes, but exports of benzene and toluene fell sharply by 90% and 83% respectively.

China imported less methanol and ethanol in March. Exports of methanol, however, swelled 457% to 63,552 tonnes.
