TAIPEI (ICIS news)--Japan’s ethylene (C2) production was down 1% at 7.522m tonnes in 2006 due to heavy turnaround schedule, according to an annual report by the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association (JPIA).
Eight out of 15 naphtha crackers were scheduled for month-long turnarounds in 2006.
Nevertheless, JPIA data showed ethylene exports jumped close to 9% to 299,000 tonnes from 274,000 tonnes despite previous expectations of tight supply during the year.
On the other hand, imports in 2006 were up at 104,000 tonnes compared with 89,000 tonnes a year ago.
The JPIA report also highlighted industry concerns such as rising naphtha costs, propylene (C3) supply deficiencies and the development of sustainable environmental technologies.
