NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--Indian Oil Corp (IOC) said late on Monday it is considering a paraxylene (PX) project at its refinery complex in Haldia, West Bengal.

The company has completed a pre-feasibility study for the proposed 350,000 tonne/year PX unit and it was waiting to buy land, a company official said.

Both the state and central governments had agreed to transfer the 82-acre (33.2 ha) land from adjoining mothballed fertilizer-chemical complex of Hindustan Fertilisers Corp to IOC, he added.

The PX project’s capacity could be revised once the company took over the land, the official said.

Output will be supplied to Mitsubishi Chemical’s subsidiary MCC PTA India which is to increase its purified terephthalic acid (PTA) output at Haldia to 1.27m tonnes/year from 470,000 tonnes/year by June 2008.

IOC is also considering building a raffinate refinery at the acquired land, which would also include a hydrocracker. It is currently expanding the crude processing capacity of its Haldia refinery to 7.5m tonnes/year from 5m tonnes/year.
