NICE (ICIS news)--Middle East investment in glass markets has caused demand for the raw material soda ash to exceed production, an analyst said on Wednesday.

Demand was projected to grow to 2.05m tonnes in 2010 from 1.76m tonnes in 2006, the analyst said at the World Soda Ash Conference in France.

But Middle East production of soda ash will be just over 1m tonnes in 2007 with only slight production growth, the analyst said.

“Kaveh Glass of Iran is expected to be the only source of increased supply to 2010,” the analyst said.

Regional demand will continue to exceed supply by 300,000 tonnes/year even in 2010, the analyst said.
