New German blend ruling to feed biodiesel demand

LONDON (ICIS news)--Biodiesel demand is set to improve and production could increase following a planned boost to the biofuel blending requirements for automobile fuel in Germany, biodiesel sellers said on Wednesday.

Biodiesel makers expected a gradual upturn in demand following the announcement from the German Agricultural Ministry on Friday 13 July that Germany's biofuels blending component would now be increased to 10% from 5%.

Sellers commented that some smaller German manufacturers, who had previously halted production due to poor economics, could restart their units, while those who had reduced their output could increase it in response to the new requirement.

The ensuing impact on biodiesel demand would most likely be a gradual upward movement rather than a sudden and immediate impact, one seller said.

It was unclear as yet, however, when the requirements would take effect.

German biodiesel producers include Biopetrol Industries and Petrotec.
