SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Sumitomo Chemical intends to shut its naphtha cracker in Chiba prefecture for a 49-day turnaround, a company source said on Friday.

The scheduled turnaround from the end of August will be the last cracker maintenance set for Japan this year.

Its 415,000 tonne/year ethylene plant will be shut from 29 August till 16 October, he said. Propylene production at the cracker is estimated around 210,000 tonnes/year, and is fed to a downstream polypropylene unit.

As Sumitomo Chemical’s ethylene production is mostly for captive use, exports will not be affected, a Japanese trader said.

Downstream plants such as polyethylene (PE) will also be shut during the turnaround.
