LONDON (ICIS news)--BASF has entered a joint development agreement with G24 Innovations (G24i) to improve the performance of G24i’s solar cells, the German chemicals company said on Thursday.

The companies agreed to start a programme to develop ionic liquids and formulations to optimise the efficiency of G24i’s dye-sensitised thin film technology.

BASF said the ionic liquids it would supply to G24i under the agreement were specifically adapted to the electrode and dye system, ensuring that the solar cell would generate power in a reliable and stable manner.

The photovoltaic cells produced by G24i were sensitive to more of the visible spectrum of light than competitors’ and able to generate power at lower light intensities, the company added.

BASF would not disclose the financial details of the joint development agreement.

Based in Cardiff, Wales, G24i manufactures automated roll-to-roll lightweight solar cells. Its major shareholders include Renewable Capital, Konarka Technologies and Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne.
