HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US-based industrial gases firm Air Products and a member of Japan’s Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corp (TNSC) plan to jointly build and operate a 200m cubic feet/year liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming, the companies said on Wednesday.

Air Products and TNSC member Matheson Tri-Gas would process crude helium produced by a natural gas processing facility that would be owned by Cimarex Energy and its partner, Riley Ridge

The Cimarex facility would process natural gas from the Riley Ridge Field in Wyoming, the second largest helium-rich natural gas field in the US

Riley Ridge is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades, Air Products and Matheson Tri-Gas said. Production at the Wyoming plant is was expected to begin in 2009.

The companies said they expect to eventually increase the capacity of the plant.

The companies did not disclose the cost of the plant.

The Wyoming helium production plant would be the 10th liquid helium plant operating in the US, and the first new US facility since 2000.  It is expected to employ 8-10 people after start-up.
