LONDON (ICIS news)--Wacker Chemie and glass maker Schott have laid the cornerstone for their joint solar silicon wafer plant in Jena, Germany, Wacker said in a statement on Monday.

Production capacity at the site would reach around 100MW/year by the end of 2008, it said.

Wacker said the joint venture would invest a total of €370m ($533m) in solar silicon development, including another new plant in Alzenau, Bavaria.

“Solar wafer production is set to expand in stages, reaching about one gigawatt/year by 2012,” said Wacker.
