MUMBAI (ICIS news)--French chemical major Rhodia plans to develop expertise in the automotive industry to meet the challenges of sustainable road mobility, the company said in Shanghai on Thursday.

"With the dramatic increase in travel in Asia, especially China, the automotive industry is facing the dual challenges of controlling emissions and reducing fuel consumption," the company said.

"Rhodia is committed to making road mobility sustainable by developing innovative solutions to help its customers respond to the key challenges of the automotive industry," added CEO Jean-Pierre Clamadieu.

Rhodia, a partner in Michelin’s Challenge Bibendum event, said it would set up a new research and development facility in Shanghai in 2008 to boost the development of innovations for the Asian market.

The company said high performance silicas reduce rolling resistance up to 25% and thus generate fuel savings of more than 5% and that its particulate filter technology developed for diesel vehicles eliminates almost all soot particles.

In addition, polyamide-based engineering plastics can reduce the weight of vehicles by 10%, limiting fuel consumption and helping to cut carbon-di-oxide emissions, Rhodia said.

"Rhodia generates about 10% of its sales in the automotive market and plans to double this figure over the next five years," the company said.
