HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazilian lawmakers will meet on Tuesday for a hearing on proposed solutions to solid waste build-up from plastic bags such as recycling and switching to biodegradable materials, according to an official bulletin on Monday.

“It is estimated that production of plastic film in Brazil is of some 210,000 tonnes/year, corresponding to about 9.7% of all the solid waste in the country,” according to excerpts from a Portuguese-language document posted on the country’s Congressional website on Monday.

Lower house committees of the Chamber of Deputies with jurisdiction over environmental issues and commerce seek to define legislation that would permit, among other things, the adoption of bio-degradable bags to replace those currently used by consumers to tote purchases from supermarkets.

The lawmakers will discuss the economic impact of the proposed measures such as loss of jobs in the plastic film industry.
