HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Motiva Enterprises is scheduled to break ground on Monday at its $7bn (€4.8bn) refinery expansion project in Port Arthur, Texas, the company said.

The 325,000 bbl/day expansion will increase the refinery’s crude oil throughput capacity to 600,000 bbl/day, making it the largest refinery in the US and one of the largest in the world, according to the company.

ExxonMobil now has the largest US plant, a 557,000 bbl/day complex at Baytown, Texas.

Motiva said the expansion is expected to create more than 4,500 construction jobs and at least 300 new full-time jobs upon completion.

“By adding 325,000 bbl/day capacity, the expansion is equivalent to building a new refinery,” said William Welte, Motiva chief executive

The production capacity is expected to be online in 2010, and it will increase Motiva’s supply of Shell branded fuels to the wholesale and direct-supply markets.

The project's primary contractor for engineering, procurement and construction is a joint venture made up of Bechtel and the Jacobs Engineering Group.

Motiva is a joint venture made up of Shell and Saudi Aramco.
