Basell starts construction at new China PP unit

MUMBAI (ICIS news)--Basell began construction at its second polypropylene (PP) compounding facility in China at Guangzhou Nansha province, to meet the growing demand in country, the company said on Wednesday.

“The new facility which is expected to be commissioned in September 2008 would be operated by the company’s newly formed fully owned subsidiary called Guangzhou Basell Advanced Polyolefins,” a company spokesperson said.

However, she declined to disclose the cost of project.

The facility would have an initial capacity of 15,000 tonnes/year, the Netherlands based company said.

“This initial capacity can be easily expanded to more than 50,000 tonnes based on future demand growth,” said said Frank Noeltgen, Basell's vice president for automotive in Asia Pacific.

“In addition to our first Chinese PP compounding facility in Suzhou, our second plant will help us to better serve our customers in the south of China with high quality products and services that meet their increased expectations,” he added.

Basell, together with its joint ventures, has manufacturing facilities in 19 countries and sells products in more than 120 countries, the company said.
