SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Mitsubishi Chemical, the Japanese major, shut its No 2 cracker in Kashima after it caught fire on Friday morning, a company official said.

"A fire had occurred at our No 2 Kashima cracker around 11:30 Japan time (02:30 GMT). We are still waiting for details on what had caused the fire and how serious it was," the official said.

He added that there would be some impact on production at the 516,000 tonne/year cracker, but was unable to provide any more details. The duration of the shutdown was also unclear.

"Hopefully, we would get more details by the end of today (Friday)," the official said.

Mitsubishi Chemical has two crackers in Kashima and one in Mizushima, Okayama prefecture, which produces a total of 1.278m tonnes/year of ethylene.
