US grocer's 1,000 truck fleet adopts biodiesel

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US grocer Safeway has converted its fleet of more than 1,000 trucks to biodiesel , the company said on Friday.

The company commemorated the switchover by fuelling one of its biodiesel trucks at a solar-powered store in California. The fuel pump is powered by wind energy, Safeway said.

"Safeway is proud to lead by example to help protect the environment," according to a statement issued by Steve Burd, Safeway's president. "Using biodiesel to power our transportation fleet will prevent millions of pounds of carbon emissions from being released into the environment."

Safeway estimates that it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75m lb (34,000 tonne)/year.
