Ciba sets March start-up for Singapore antioxidants

BASEL, Switzerland (ICIS news)--Ciba's new 30,000 tonne/year antioxidants plant in Singapore is due to start production in March and will form "an important step in our global set-up", an executive of the Swiss specialty chemicals company said on Friday.

 

The state-of-the-art unit on Jurong Island will supply customers in Asia and the Middle East, said Giordano Righini, executive vice-president of Ciba's plastics additives segment.

 

"From a logistical point of view, Singapore is very well situated. In the future we will have something in the Middle East but for the time being - perhaps the next three years - we will supply the Middle East from Singapore," he said.

 

Ciba already has an antioxidants plant with a capacity of 15,000-20,000 tonnes/year in Shanghai, China.

 

Meanwhile, another plant in Nanjing, which will produce pigments including diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP), will be up and running in August/September, he said.

 

Righini, speaking on the sidelines of the firm's annual results conference, was upbeat following a 3% rise in sales year-on-year for its plastics additives segment to Swiss francs (Swfr) 2.16bn ($1.95bn), the lubricant additives and personal care businesses showing particularly strong growth.
