SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Union Petrochemical (UKEM), Thailand’s leading chemical distributor, plans to build a baht (Bt) 200m ($6.4m) solvents plant in the country, a senior company executive said on Wednesday.
"We have sent in the proposal for a joint venture to an American company, and we are only waiting for their reply," UKEM’s deputy managing director Perajed Suwwanapasi said.
If the American company turned down the offer, UKEM could form a joint venture with a Chinese company, he added.
UKEM will build the new ester production facility, Thailand’s first, by the second half of 2009.
UKEM has 25 years of experience in chemical distribution and distributes around 60,000 tonnes of solvents each year.
Thailand consumes 300,000 tonnes of solvents a year, 40% of which are imported.
