HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The global water-treatment industry could to grow at a compound annual rate of 6.4% in 2006-2011 due to tighter health and environmental regulations, an analyst said on Friday.

In particular, Chinese and Asian demand for stronger environmental enforcement is reaching critical mass, according to an overview by Jeff Sprague, an analyst at Citigroup.

Water-treatment chemicals are end users of chlorine and caustic soda among other materials.

Water-treatment chemicals make up a global industry that is worth $29bn (€18bn), Sprague said.

The water-treatment industry could also expand due to more intensive industrial applications, Sprague said. Increased process rigour is also driving higher purity needs.

Growing production in ethanol, biodiesel and tar sands could also drive growth in the industry, he said.

Major US producers of water-treatment chemicals include Arch Chemicals, Ashland and Nalco.

However, the industry also has several smaller producers, Sprague wrote. As such, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) could increase.

Rohm and Haas and Dow Chemical have identified water-treatment chemicals as a future area of focus, Sprague said in the overview.
