TORONTO (ICIS news)--German energy firm E.ON will enter the UK government’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) competition with a plan to build two 800 megawatt (MW) CCS-ready coal-fired units at Kingsnorth in Kent, it said on Monday.

The company’s bid was supported by a number of partners, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and US petrochemicals and energy engineering firm Fluor, it said.

The de-carbonisation of fossil fuels – and especially coal - was at the core of the climate change debate, said Paul Golby, CEO of E.ON UK.

The proposed Kingsnorth project would demonstrate that carbon capture would work on a commercial scale, he said.

“Moreover, how can we expect other nations such as China or India to adopt carbon capture technology unless we can demonstrate that it can be retrofitted?” he added.

Earlier this month RWE npower formed a partnership with five companies to bid for the CCS competition with plans for CCS-ready coal-fired plants in Essex and Northumberland.
