LONDON (ICIS news)--European bisphenol-A (BPA) freely negotiated prices were agreed in April between a rollover and plus €10/tonne ($16/tonne), as higher raw material costs in March offset stable market dynamics, market sources said on Friday.

The April price range was assessed at €1,450-1,530/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe), according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing, representing an increase of €10/tonne at the low end and a rollover at the upper part of the March spread.

A few sellers reported increments of up to €40/tonne, but there was no buyer confirmation to support this.

Although increases of up to €20/tonne were confirmed on the buy-side, low-end business was reported on average at €1,450/tonne FD NWE, which represented an increase of €10/tonne from the March levels. Numbers either side of the range were also reported, but they were not widely confirmed.

One buyer said it had secured a decrease of €10/tonne for its April freely negotiated business on the back of good availability. However, this was not considered to represent the general direction in the market.

For formula-related contracts, prices moved up approximately €50/tonne, in line with the benzene movement. Precise levels were not disclosed.

BPA demand was described as fairly steady, despite some downstream variation. The epoxy resin sector remained healthy and was seen to compensate to a certain extent for weakness in certain parts of the polycarbonate sector.

BPA market participants include Bayer, Hexion, Valspar, Air Products and Mitsui. The material is used as a feedstock in the production of epoxy resins, polycarbonate and polyols.
