SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--An explosion at Maoming Petrochemical’s refinery on Wednesday afternoon damaged a furnace at its hydrotreater unit, a local government official said.

The fire was put out around 18:00 local time (10:00 GMT), but it was unclear when the hydrotreater could be restarted, the official from the local work safety bureau said on Thursday.

Maoming Petrochemical could not be immediately reached for comment.

A hydrotreater removes sulphur from refined oil products. The company, a Sinopec subsidiary, operates a 13.5m tonne/year refinery and produces nearly 1m tonnes of ethylene annually.
