HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Foster Wheeler has been awarded a contract for a wood residues biomass gasifier to make feedstock for renewable diesel fuel at a demonstration plant in
Foster Wheeler said its Finnish subsidiary, Foster Wheeler Energia, was awarded the contract by NSE Biofuels for a circulating fluidised-bed (CFB) biomass gasifier in Varkaus.
NSE Biofuels Oy is a 50/50 joint venture by paper, packaging and timber products maker Stora Enso Oyj and Neste Oil.
The plant will use Foster Wheeler’s fuel-flexible circulating fluidised-bed gasification technology to convert biomass/wood residue into a synthetic gas to be used in a gas-to-liquids process to make feedstock for renewable diesel.
The terms of the award were not disclosed. The plant is expected to start up in early 2009 and will be integrated into the energy infrastructure of the Stora Enso Varkaus Mill.
“Foster Wheeler and the JV partners have also agreed in principle for further co-operation, aiming for delivery of a commercial-scale production plant to be located at one of Stora Enso’s mills,” the engineering firm said.
Finnish major Neste Oil announced in March 2007 it had signed an agreement with Stora Enso to develop a technology producing biofuels and invest €14m ($22m) in a pilot plant.
