HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Rohm and Haas has committed to give yuan (CNY) 500,000 ($71,531) to the Red Cross aid agency to support relief efforts for the victims of Monday's earthquake in China, an official from the US-based specialty chemicals firm said on Wednesday.

"Rohm and Haas is grateful that all of its employees are safe and that no operations were directly affected by this disaster," said Christine Miller, the company's director of North American communications said.

"Nevertheless, the company recognises the tremendous need to support those who were affected," it added.

In addition to the CNY500,000 donation, Rohm and Haas is encouraging its employees to contribute to relief agencies and has established a website through which they can make a donation.

Rohm and Haas will match employee contributions up to a limit of $50,000.

The company operates at 14 locations in China, as well as two in Hong Kong.

The earthquake, which affected the country's southwest province of Sichuan, has seen almost 15,000 people lose their lives according to the latest estimates.
