Almost 20,000 killed in China earthquake - reports

LONDON (ICIS news)--Almost 20,000 people are known to have been killed in Monday’s devastating earthquake in Sichuan, southwest China, media reports said on Thursday.

 

The official death toll has now risen to over 19,500, according to official news agency Xinhua.

 

More than 25,000 people remain buried while another 14,000 were still missing, it said.

 

A massive search and rescue operation involving almost 100,000 relief workers and more than 900 soldiers was still underway on Thursday.
