SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Chandra Asri has shut its 620,000 tonne/year cracker in Merak, West Java, due to compressor problems, a source at Indonesia’s sole cracker operator said on Friday.

The cracker was shut on 14 May and the company is targeting for a restart early next week, he said.

Ethylene deliveries to its contractual customers were not affected as the producer could dip into its inventories, the source added.

Chandra had been running the cracker at a reduced rate of 80% prior to the unplanned shutdown due to high feedstock naphtha costs.

Chandra Asri supplies ethylene to Indonesian customers such as vinyls maker Asahimas Chemical and Sulfindo Adiusaha via pipeline.

The company also runs a 300,000 tonne/year polyethylene (PE) plant in Anyer and supplies propylene to polypropylene (PP) maker Tri Polyta.
