China chem shipping activity unaffected by quake

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Chemical shipping activities in China have not been affected by Monday’s earthquake, said industry sources on Friday.

 

“So far, we have not been hearing any shipping schedules being affected. As long as the ports are not affected, it will be business as usual,” a broker said.

 

Demand for chemical tonnage remained lacklustre but is slowly picking up for June nominations.

 

Another broker said business was so slow that there were not many schedules to cancel even if they were affected.

 

Freight rates for 3,000 tonne chemical cargoes remained unchanged at $49-51/tonne from Singapore to mid-China, while rates for 5,000 tonne parcels were seen at $39-41/tonne from Indonesia to mid-China/Taiwan.

 

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit the country’s southwest province of Sichuan, killing as many as 50,000 people.
