TORONTO (ICIS news)--Borealis has started construction work to expand its plastics innovations headquarters in Linz, Austria, the polyolefins producer said on Friday.

With an investment of €30m ($46m), Linz was becoming the international hub of Borealis' research activities, the company said.

The expansion was expected to be completed in autumn 2009, it added.

Some 100 newly recruited researchers would join the current team of 250 people to focus on innovations for compounding as well as solutions for the pipe, automotive and advanced packaging industries, it said.

Plastics had strong growth potential and the Linz region - with its universities, research institutes and polymer processing facilities - was an ideal location for the company, it added.

Upper Austria governor Josef Puhringer said the province benefited from research subsidies by Austria’s federal government and a €600m strategic programme called Innovative Upper Austria 2010
