VIENNA (ICIS news)--Bulgarian fertilizer producer Agropolychim has begun trial production of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and monammonium phosphate (MAP) at its Devnya plant, said a company official on Tuesday.
“We will switch from triple superphosphate (TSP) production on 20 May and production of DAP/MAP will take place for the next 1-2 months to test the production,” said company CEO Philippe Rombaut on the sidelines of the 76th International Fertilizer Industry Association conference.
“It is a hedging strategy - we want to be flexible in providing customers a choice,” he added.
The strategy also recognised the rapid rise in phosphate fertilizers since the beginning of 2007 due to strong demand and high crop prices globally.
Normally, Agropolychim produces around 25,000-27,000 tonnes/month of TSP, 90% of which is exported to various global markets.
On TSP, Rombaut said the company was sold out and was loading its last commitments now.
“We are planning to build an ammonia terminal to bring product into the plant,” he said. “This is a hedge strategy to ensure security of supply - at present we make our own ammonia - 630 tonnes/day.”
Ammonia is a feedstock used in the production of phosphate fertilizers.
