SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Sinopec subsidiary Maoming Petrochemical shut down its butadiene (BD) units on Wednesday after a fire at its No 2 cracker, a company source said.

Repair work is expected to last about 40 days and there was no casualty, he added.

Maoming has two BD lines with a total capacity of 150,000tonnes /year comprising a 20,000 tonne/year downstream unit of the No 1 cracker and another 130,000 tonne/year BD line of No 2 cracker.

The fire also halted operations at the No 1 cracker Tuesday night due to some minor impact such as integrated wiring, but is due to restart soon on Wednesday or on Thursday, the source said.

Sinopec’s  Shanghai branch has lifted BD prices by yuan (CNY) 500/tonne to CNY 20,000/tonne ($2,886/tonne) ex-works in east China this morning, a company source said.

The fire at the No 2 cracker was due to a lightning strike.
