STOCKHOLM (ICIS news)--Specialty chemicals and pharmaceutical firms are taking part in three industrial biotechnology research projects funded by the Swedish agency for innovation systems Vinnova, it said on Monday.
Vinnova will provide €5.1m ($7.8m) over five years while the costs for participating companies were not disclosed.
The first project, headed by Perstorp Specialty Chemicals, aims at developing a platform for the production of organic acids from biological resources instead of fossil raw materials.

The second plans to develop process technology with immobilised biocatalysts and is headed by Cambrex Karlskoga, the Swedish arm of US active ingredients’ producer Cambrex.
GE Heathcare Biosciences, Perstorp, Protista International and
The third project, bio-amines, will aim to replace classical chemical synthesis with biocatalysis in the pharma and chemical industries, leading to less waste and less environmental impact. AstraZeneca Process R&D will head the project.
