HOUSTON (ICIS news)--DuPont subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred has identified and incorporated new molecular markers into its soybean research programme, which could boost yields by 40% within 10 years, the US company said on Thursday.
Molecular markers act as road signs, directing scientists to a particular DNA segment that is related to a specific trait, DuPont said. Once scientists identify the molecular markers, they can use DNA analysis to screen for the presence of the specific traits.
Pioneer Hi-Bred will use the markers to bring to market soy beans that are resistant to Asian soybean rust, soybean aphids and frogeye leaf spot, the company said.
Soybeans are used to produce soy bean oil, a feedstock for biodiesel.
