SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--US chemical giant DuPont is on track to meet its set of emission reduction and energy efficiency targets for 2015, the company said in its 2008 sustainability progress report released on Monday.

“We are taking a holistic approach to sustainability that is fully integrated into our business models,” said chairman and CEO Chad Holiday. "It is a central factor in our research and development and our marketing and sales functions."

DuPont has managed to achieve an overall 7% reduction in energy use from 1990 levels through its “Energy Breakout” initiatives that were launched in 2005-2006.

As a result, total energy consumption was reduced by more than 8,000bn Btu, which  translates approximately to $60m in fuel, electricity and purchased steam, the report said.

The company has also achieved its target of obtaining 6% of its total energy requirements from renewable sources against its stated target of 10% by 2015.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions had also been driven down 9.5% against 2004 levels, despite a 41% increase in production volume since 1990, through clean development mechanism projects such as the Babine River ethylene dryer project in Texas that has resulted in financial savings of more than $2.5m, the report said.

DuPont had also targeted to employ 100% fuel-efficient cars and light trucks by 2015 and currently has 22% of its fleet of vehicles that meeting expectations.

The company also recorded a 5% decrease in water consumption for its global sites and has said that it expects for it to reduce levels by at least 30% over the next 10 years.

In October 2006, the company established a set of footprint reduction goals for 2015 that revolved around cutting down waste, emissions and energy use.
