SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japan’s styrene monomer (SM) producer Idemitsu Kosan Co has shut down its two units in Tokuyama for a 45-day turnaround, a company source said on Wednesday.

The 120,000 tonne/year No 1 and 220,000 tonne/year No 2 units were expected to restart by the end of October, the source added.

The company operates another 210,000 tonne/year unit in Chiba, which is operating at a reduced rate of around 70%, the source said.

Feeble demand for SM in the third quarter had prompted producers in Japan to scale down output ratios.

Japanese producers include Asahi Kasei Co, Nihon Oxirane Co, Denki Kagaku, Mitsubishi Chemicals and Nippon Steel Chemicals.
