HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US companies imported 78,068 tonnes of glycerine during the first eight months of this year, a 32% increase from the 59,136 tonnes brought in during the same time last year, according to data the US International Trade Commission (ITC) released on Friday.
A glycerine glut in Asia led to a steady stream of material coming across the Pacific Ocean. Malaysia was the biggest glycerine supplier to the US, shipping 39,390 tonnes from January through August 2008, a 23% hike from the same period in 2007.
August spot prices for vegetable-based glycerine were assessed at 55-65 cents/lb ($1,213-1,433/tonne or €885-1,046/tonne), according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing. Tallow-based material was assessed at 60-70 cents/lb.
