SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Taiwan-based China Petrochemical Development Corp (CPDC) has shut down its 90,000 tonne/year caprolactam plant in Toufen in early October due to weak demand, a company source said on Thursday.

“At present, the downstream demand is very poor, and many people have lost confidence at the market outlook and retreated to the sidelines,” the source said, adding the plant would likely restart in mid-November.

The company was running its other 180,000 tonne/year CPL unit in Kaohsiung at 70% operating rates.

“If the demand could not recover soon, we will consider shutting down this one unit in the future,” the source added.

The low operating rates of downstream sectors have led to high inventory levels in China and Taiwan, traders said.
