TORONTO (ICIS news)--Germany’s chemical industry is expected to lose 3,500 jobs next year, compared with current employment of 342,500, according to a survey on Tuesday.

The survey, by chemical employee’s association VAA, found that 40% of chemical and pharmaceutical producers were mulling job cuts while only 22% were thinking of adding staff.

Production and service functions would likely be most affected by the cuts.

However, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical producers were expected to expand their workforces.

VAA cited the financial market crisis as a key factor impacting its projections.

The 30,000 member Cologne-based association represents the interests of non-union managerial and executive employees in Germany’s chemicals industry.
