HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US chlor-alkali production was 70% of capacity in November, down from 86% of capacity in October, according to data released by the Chlorine Institute on Friday.

The trade group said 807,480 tons (732,546 tonnes) of chlorine and 847,590 tons of caustic soda were produced in November.

Producers said the decline is a result of weakening demand for chlorine from the downstream polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated solvent industries.

Moreover, sources said they expected chlor-alkali production to fall ever further in December as the trend continues.

US chlor-alkali producers include Dow Chemical, Occidental Chemical, Olin, PPG Industries, Georgia Gulf, Bayer, Shintech and Formosa Plastics.
