EC clears merger of Oleon and Diester Industrie

PARIS (ICIS news)--The European Commission announced on Thursday it had approved the acquisition of Belgian oleochemicals producer Oleon by the French biodiesel manufacturer Diester Industrie.

The Commission said the transaction would "not significantly impede effective competition within the European Economic Area (EEA) or a substantial part of it".

Both companies produce and sell biodiesel and glycerine, a biodiesel by-product sold in a refined form to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics companies.

However, the Commission concluded that the merged entity would continue to face strong competition from numerous oleochemical companies and would be unable to close off competing refined glycerine manufacturers' access to crude glycerine supplies.
